Seniors competitions These competitions have been carried over from the winter season. Crystal Group 1 Crystal Group 2 Pairs league The final of the Crystal competition will be between Patrick Honan and Hugh Devlin. Patrick beat Hugh in the final, well done.
The away break for 2020 was Hill Valley. The presentation video is here.
Summer matches against other clubs The situation is a bit fluid and the main club web site will be up-to-date with the current list of fixtures. The latest list with the latest match results is here.
Greetham Valley away day 30/9/21 This was the last away day of the year with a visit to the Valley course at Greetham Valley, near Oakham. There is another course, the lakes course, that a few groups briefly explored. At times, the weather was wet and very windy but most enjoyed the course, quite a challenge both from the golf and the terrain. The results were :- Longest drive Peter Maddock, two sleeves of balls Nearest pin on 3 Trevor Davies, two sleeves of balls Nearest pin on 3 Chris Conway, two sleeves of balls. The only one to land on the green Third, 35 points Rob Poole, voucher Second, 36 points Trevor Davies, voucher First, 38 points Patrick Honan, voucher, bottle of wine and a trophy
Ladies "home" 29/9/21 The last match for the seniors played in bright sunshine against out ladies team, lead by their captain, Jean Neesham, and vice captain, Jane Lewis. This year we tried an alternative scoring with stableford better ball match play as an experiment. Perhaps with a 7 to 1 win for the men, this ma y change again in the future, but overall, another enjoyable friendly match.
Kibworth home 22/9/21 This was the home match as we missed the away fixture due to the freak hailstorm. This time however, the weather could not have been better. Several close results with a 5 to 2 win for Lutterworth.
Glen Gorse away 15/9/21 Glen Gorse had to cut down the number of teams to six pairs, but we had a lovely day with them, the greens had suffered some damage but the course was good. We lost the match by one point, 3.5 to 2.5. Dinner was excellent....
Kirby Muxloe away 6/9/21 This match was the third time we had played Kirby Muxloe over the recent weeks. Our first encounter was the county mixed when we lost at home. However, Kirby Muxloe are in the final against Rothley, we wish them luck. The next encounter, also at home, we managed a win so the away fixture was the revenge decider. We decided to play similar teams so we played in perfect conditions with little wind and scorching sun, who needs Spain ! As the groups came in, the tension was mounting between the two captains. Before that last group appeared on the 18th green, Lutterworth were on match in the lead, three and a half to two and a half, so the results depended on the last, with a win for Lutterworth. A great day out enjoyed by both teams.
Northampton mixed open 2/9/21 We put out 5 teams of four players in this annual open we have been supporting for several years. Everyone always looks forward to playing at Harlestone with our top team, of Trevor Davies, Gareth Pomfret, Mick Shilcock and Vince Hallam scoring 86 points. The winners scored 92 and there were two teams on 88, so quite close but not close enough. Nothing on nearest the pin, although one group going out first did get their names on the sheet, if only briefly. Kirby Muxloe home 25/8/21 This was the second time we play Kirby Muxloe at home so the opportunity to seek revenge for our defeat in the county knock-out. Kirby Muxloe are in the final against Rothley. However, a great match that saw our seniors win 4 and a half to 2 and a half.
Nuneaton away 19/8/21 Another good win away played in the usual friendly fashion. Some were playing Nuneaton for the first time and all were impressed with the course.
Rugby Team Competition 19/8/21 This annual team competition was on the same day as the Nuneaton away match so an additional challenge fielding a team of 6. There were 11 teams in all with the winning score, total of all 6 Stableford scores, of 207 from a team from Atherstone. We came last on 185, not so far behind.
Oundle away 16/8/21 Our away match at Oundle, an annual fixture on this interesting, challenging course, was the opportunity for Oundle to seek revenge for the defeat at Lutterworth. This they certainly succeeded with a whitewash.
Cosby home 9/8/21 This was the chance for Cosby to seek revenge for our unexpected win when we were away at Cosby. This was not to be with another home win.
Staverton home 30/7/21 A truly soggy day with several showers and a downpour as well. Tea and cake at the halfway kept us all going, and helped us decide that we should complete the match. Lutterworth came out winners at 4.5 to Stavertons' 2.5.
Kilworth Springs away 19/7/21 This annual meeting was to contest the Lauwrie Lott trophy that has been held by Kilworth springs for the past 3 years. A very hot day with many players using umbrellas as sun shades. The course, was as expected, very dry with lots of run but the greens were good and fast. Nirmal Singh won the visitors nearest the pin on the sixth and Kilworth's captain, Chris Dix, had to award himself with the nearest the pin on the eighteenth. the overall result was a 5 to 3 win to Kilworth so they retain the trophy fo another year.
Lingdale away 14/7/21 Unlike the C Team the previous week who got drowned, we enjoyed hot sunshine. Lingdale got their revenge from their defeat when they came to us by beating us 5 and 2. Another enjoyable day with a great meal to follow.
Whetstone away 7/7/21 An away match for Whetstone to seek their revenge after losing at Lutterworth. This they managed by 4 to 2. Everyone had a good day with only one sharp shower. After some debate, the nearest the pin on the 17th hole was agreed to include all players, just as well as Bob Howes had put his tee shot to within 18 inches. After an excellent meal, he was presented with a box of golf balls, having been warned off the bottle of wine.
Glen Gorse home 1/7/21 Another good home match with only the captain halving his match, all the other pairs won their's. Nevertheless, all played in the usual best spirit. This should hopefully be the last inter-club match on the temporary 18th green after the fire. Even so, it has proved quite a challenge.
Rugby away 28/6/21 An away game in mixed weather. Some had an early, start, teeing off at 8:50 ! ! Course was in good condition with a good meal after. The Rugby captain wanted to use a points scoring for all 18 holes with 1 point for the side winning a hole. However, as match play, there was the "normal" playing scoring also. So, different results depending on how you look at it. As match play, Rugby won 4 to 3. However, on the points scoring Lutterworth won by 3 points, 64.5 to 61.5. So a draw.
County Knock-out at home to Kirby Muxloe, 25/6/21 This was the first round of the county knock-out competition that Lutterworth seniors won in 2019. This year, the format was different from the straight match play of the two previous years. Betterball Stableford with a point for the team with the highest Stableford score. Kirby Muxloe won the first four games with the whitewash being saved by Peter Maddock and Brian Asbury. Better luck next year.
Market Harborough away 24/6/21 Another visit to this challenging course with their course in excellent condition. Sadly, we were defeated by 5 to 2. All those that joined their team after enjoyed good meal and the usual speeches, that we miss at Lutterworth.
Whetstone home 17/6/21 Another match blessed with good weather. Several of the Whetstone players had not been to Lutterworth before and were impressed with the course. One commented, there are more hills on the first than on our home course. A good victory for Lutterworth six and a half to a half.
Oundle home 26/5/21 Another enjoyable with much appreciated cakes at the half way house and getting together in the "beer tent". Another win five and a half to one and a half.
Lingdale home 19/5/21 Another good home game that our visitors really enjoyed, both the course and the half way house. Another largely sunny day with one sharp shower but the last group walked in, after winning, to rumbles of thunder. Our first match when we could enjoy a drink after playing. A good home result winning by four & a half to two and a half.
Cosby away 17/5/21 Our first away match after some aspects of lock down ere eased. Course in good condition and only one sharp shower. Everyone enjoyed the 4 & 3 win followed by excellent steak and kidney pie and speeches. First time for the seniors to enjoy this since September 2019.
Kilworth Springs home 13/5/21 This was the first seniors home match after the clubhouse fire so was "arrive - play - depart". Nevertheless, both teams enjoyed their games and the half way house, with power, that provided the usual excellent cakes. This also was the first time for some to play the dog-leg eighteenth holes with a challenging second to the new green. There were a couple of memorable happenings. In one, one of the Kilworth players hit a driver, into the gale, on the fifteenth to finish 6 inches from the hole. For the fourth group, Kilworth were looking to win the hole after one of their second shots hit the pin and dropped a few inches from the hole, a guaranteed birdie. Neil Campbell was off the green to the left who then proceeded to chip in to half the hole. A bit of a shock to Kilworth. The end result was a 5 2 win for Lutterworth.
Collingtree away day 5/5/21 This was the first away day of the 2021 season. In all 39 arrived to coffee and bacon cobs.
We last played there 3 years ago when we were not impressed with the state of the course so the course was visited recently to check it out and all seemed OK then. However, the course layout had subsequently undergone some major changes, with each half swapped over. This lead to too much confusion.
In spite of this and a heavy shower, most completed the course that was followed by bangers and mash outside, fortunately in the relative dry. Then prize giving. The results were :- Overall winner Andrew Astin with 39 points, Norman's guest Longest drive Peter Maddock Nearest pin, hole 6 Gareth Pomfret Nearest pin, hole 9 Peter Maddock. This was the signature hole outside the club house verandah. Although is is a par 5, this was nearest the pin but NOT via the water. There was also a separate presentation of the nearest the pin from our away match against Staverton with Hugh Devlin the winner, even though he was the only one on the green.
Buckingham open, 22/4/21 Four pairs entered this as we had done in 2019. Gavin LeChat and Lyn Griffiths had the highest of our scores on 39, three off the winners. Great weather and a very entertaining course. There was one incident involving a buggy in the ditch. Apparently, the subsequent clean-up was rather protracted. In view of previous driving issues, the driver is reviewing whether further driving instruction would be desirable.
Rothley, home, 21/4/21 This was on the day after our defeat but what a change in the weather, almost needing 'winter woollies'. However, another enjoyable match with a home win, 4.5 to 1.5. Again, the cake at the half way house was much appreciated. Even though we could not have an after match meal, both teams were together after on the terrace, even a couple of short speeches from the captains. We also enjoyed Ken Earp's company making a visit, although not playing yet.
Staverton away, 20/4/21 Again, we seem to be blessed with great weather for our matches. Their course was in very good condition with plenty of run on the ball. Even though several players had not played there before, all enjoyed the course, competition and more importantly, the company. However, the results, as they came in, did not paint an encouraging picture. The first six groups all lost so only the last group, that halved their match save the whitewash. Staverton had generously donated a bottle of Prosseco for nearest the pin on the difficult par 3 hole 12. As Hugh Devlin was the only player to actually land on the green and stay on it, he won the prize. Altogether, another great day.
Nuneaton, home 31/3/21 This was our first match of the 2021 season, albeit with COVID restrictions. Everyone was really rusty after three months with no play. In spite of the six nil win to Lutterworth, everyone enjoyed the marvellous weather and great condition of the course. Tea and cakes at the half-way house was also "a nice thing"
Starting play again The golf course is re-opening on Monday 29 March. Several points for us are below :-
Bookings start at 6:00 on Monday 22nd March for play from Monday 29th March in fourballs.
We have decided to continue the Crystal knock-out which is fairly well through anyway with a completion hopefully as soon as possible. The Pairs Winter league we will continue throughout the summer, as only 4 games had been played. There will be a cut-off of the end of September for this. As only 4 days qualified for the Winter Eclectic, we are not continuing with this over the summer. The commemorative trees have been delivered and will soon get planted between the 12th green and the route down the 2nd. I would like a dedication after mid June when many of us can gather, according to Boris. The final of the singles leagues still need to be played.
There are three important dates for the diary. An away day at Collingtree on 5 May, the list is here An away break at the MacDonalds Hill Valley resort on 25 and 26 July, the list is here An away day at Greetham Valley, near Oakham, on 30 September.
