B Team Match. After several calls with Garry Poole this Match was set up and ready to go. Then, on the day the weather was awful and we decided to cancel the match. Rob in the Kitchens was good and said he would be able to re-use the ordered food. Honours even, it was a draw..
Ladies V Seniors Match 27/9/23 We were able to finally field four teams each and had a lovely day for the Match. Coffee, tea and cake, and a roast were all enjoyed along with several beers and plenty of wine. The catering was first class, again... The Seniors won four to zero; the Ladies vowed to get us back..
Scraptoft away day 18/9/23 We had the last of our Summer 2023 Away Days at Scraptoft Golf Club on Monday 18th Sept. The summer weather was slipping away and the choice of wearing shorts was a tough one. Some braved it. Twenty one players attended, starting with bacon rolls (cobs) and coffee in the Clubhouse. There were a couple of short downpours as forecast, but generally it was pleasant weather. The course was in good condition and the greens were very good (even tricky).
The final results were; - Nearest Pin 2nd hole - Eddie Ford - Nearest Pin 11th hole - Ian Morris - Runner Up 35 Points - Norman Beaumont - Winner 38 points - Alan Thiel
Glen Gorse away 13/9/23 Everyone arrived on time and we all had coffee together. The course was in very good order, and the hosts were exceptional. Building work next door is huge, but there is no threat to the course future at the moment. After dinner and speeches, announced that Lutterworth won 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.
Kibworth home 6/9/23 Eight pairs were fielded by Lutterworth and Kibworth , on a sunny Summer's day. The day went well and the course was good, even though the greens were being spiked and dressed. Results came in and it was close all the way to the last game. Another great meal was provided by catering.. Kibworth won 4 1/2 to 3 1/2...
Club Goody Singles knock-out final Please find below Tony Fryer's recollection of this game he play on Friday 1 September I played Nick Henson H/cap 10 on Friday 02 Sept at 11.30 in the Final of the Goody knockout Matchplay competition. I received 6 shots. Weather was good and I managed to get 3 up on the 11th hole, after losing a ball in the water on the 4th. Nick then won 6 holes on the bounce with 5 Pars after myself putting my drive OOB on the 13th and a second ball in the water on the 15th. It just wasn't my best back 9 and Nick played extremely well, eventually sealing it on the 17th hole 3&1. A very enjoyable game nonetheless, and overseen by Jerry the President as referee and scorer.
Kirby Muxloe home 31/8/23 A nice Summers day with little chance of rain, although the first group had Hail on the second (the size of golf balls...) The course was great and everyone was pleased with it. Afterwards we had a lovely meal (Roast) and the usual good banter. Home happy... Lutterworth won 6 to 1.
LRGU Knock-out semi final 22/8/23 This took place against The Leicestershire Golf club and was played at Kirby Muxloe, an independent course. Each team had 5 pairs playing Stableford better-ball. After four groups had come in, it was two matches each. The last group were seen coming off the 17th green tied. The tension was palpable. As the one of the Leicestershire players came off, he gave the thumbs up. They had won by one shot so they go through to the final. The other semi-final is between Charnwood and Kirby Muxloe and is being played at Lutterworth a few days later.
Oundle away 14/8/23 After several late changes, Lutterworth managed to get a full team to the Oundle match. The day was well organised and the course in reasonable shape, and the weather was very good to us. Post match dinner was as good as ever, with the hosts looking after us. The result was a victory to Oundle with Lutterworth only managing a few Halves and not one Win...
Kirby Muxloe away 10/8/23 What a lovely summer's day, with the course in great shape, and several LRGU players having the opportunity to see it prior to our upcoming semi final at this venue. The competition was tough, and could have gone either way; Lutterworth won 4 to 3.
Cosby Home, 07/08 The new Clubhouse steels were going up, and Tony had his revenge for losing at Cosby in May. Apart from that (and Phil P playing a blinder) it was downhill as we lost 2 1/2 to 4 1/2....
Staverton home 28/7/23 Another enjoyable fixture against Staverton. Excellent chicken dinner after was appreciated by all. A few close games with their captain, Ian Lucas, having a birdy on the last hole, just to rub salt in the wound having already won on the 16th. As the first group were playing onto the third green, a huge crash as a large part of one of the trees on the side of the eleventh hole came crashing down.
Market Harborough away 24/7/23 Another chance to play their course that was in great condition in spite of the early rain. Everyone was trying to predict when the rain would stop which did roughly on schedule. A close match that was decided by Lutterworth winning the last group to halve the match overall. A fair result.
LRGU Knock-out vs Cosby home 21/7/23 This was the next round of the county knock-out competition after we had beaten Lingdale. The format was pairs betterball Stableford with total points for each team. The first four of the five groups tied with Cosby winning 2 matches and Lutterworth the other two. So the result all rested on the last group. Lutterworth managed to win this by just one Stableford point. We now have to play The Leicestershire club in the semi-final. Last year, we also got through to the semi-final that we lost. A great result.
Kilworth Springs Away, 17/07 Course Captain was Lyn Griffiths, eight teams each side, lovely day's weather. Result was win to Kilworth, 4 1/2 to 3 1/2.
Kibworth B Away, 14/07 Bad weather forecast, but decided we should go ahead previous evening; weather was fine so decided to play nine holes and have an early dinner. Worked out well and Match halved at 4 each. Then it rained..
Lingdale away 12/7/23 The welcome at Lingdale was very good and we had eight pairs each. A briefing by the Captains and then out off two tees to fine weather. The last groups had a little rain but we all finished in good time, and sat down together to a fine dinner. Lingdale won by five points to three, but, Capt Tony won nearest the pin...
Whetstone away 5/7/23 A lovely summer day, with the course in good condition, and sixteen players fielded in each team. After coffee and some finalisation of meals, we got off on time and had a good day out, finishing off with an excellent meal and drinks. The scores were six points to Whetstone, two to Lutterworth; must do better....
Glen Gorse home Thursday 29/6/23 We welcomed Glen Gorse again to glorious weather and a course in great condition. Several matches went down to the last putts on the last green. Our visitors enjoyed our hospitality and the usual excellent meal after. The result was a narrow defeat 3.5 to 2.5
Monday 26/06/2023 Lutterworth Seniors v Rugby Seniors away The day started well with good weather and Ray Walsh the team captain of the day, being supported by both Tony and Bob. We were welcomed to Rugby Golf Club with coffee and biscuits and an Introductory briefing by Bob Graham Rugby Captain. We all enjoyed a well presented course but found the Rugby Team to be strong and on great form. The result unfortunately reflected this with a 5-1 loss. We did all leave well fed and watered and in good spirits
LRGU County Knock-out home 21/6/23 This was against a strong Lingdale team. Congratulations to all in the squad on a brilliant win today 4 to 1. We are due to play at home against Cosby Seniors by 24th July 2023.
Whetstone home 15/6/23 Due to high interest the Captain's decided to field eight teams each. The day was beautiful, sunny, and a clear mid June day, Whetstone arrived early and enjoyed coffee outside where introductions and final arrangements were cleared up. Off we went and the first group had a very close match, agreeing to a half on the 18th tee, a very sporting decision. The final result was four points each, a draw.
Horsley Manor away day 5/6/23 On Monday 5th June twenty four Seniors visited Horsley Lodge Golf Club near Derby. Recommended by Malcolm. The day started with bacon rolls and coffee, then some housekeeping, and off we went at 10:16. The weather was pleasant and dry, and the course was in very good condition. Every hole was different, and the features were plentiful; for example stone walls, water, etc.. After playing we all gathered in the meeting area and prizes were awarded as follows; Overall winner - T Davies Runner Up - T Brader Nearest Pins - N Singh and R Bowden Longest Drive - A Ogden
Everyone (really...) enjoyed the course, and I suspect we will be back next year.
Ullesthorpe home 1/6/23 A typical early June day, coat or no coat, was that rain ?? Our competitors were looking forward to the day and we had a good turn out for coffee and welcomes. Again, the Half Way House was good, and the meal afterwards was great, well done Rob and the Kitchen. Lutterworth won five games to one.
Oundle home 24/5/23 Beautiful day, course in great condition, and everyone arrived on time. The first match was a convincing win, and the last one repeated that result. The mid matches were a string of losses sadly, and Oundle won 4 1/2 to 2 1/2.
Lingdale home 17/5/23 A lovely early Summers day and Lingdale were all looking forward to the Match. The Course was in great condition, but we did play Winter Rules on Fairways as a precaution. The final result was Lutterworth 4 and Lingdale 3.
Cosby home 15/5/23 Our first game against Cosby this season, and sensibly we agreed to continue placing on cut areas. The course was still soggy in places and every shot collected mud on the ball. This made the Match much better for everyone involved. Dinner was excellent. Cosby won 4 to 3.
Kilworth Spring home 11/5/23 The forecast was for scattered showers, but as it turned out we had clouds but no rain. A delightful day for golf. The Halfway House was great, and the post Match meal was very good. Kilworth were a pleasure to host. Lutterworth won 4 1/2 to 2 1/2.
Staverton away 21/4/23 At 07:30 the Captains decided to proceed with the Match after a night of rain and more forecast.. The food had been ordered and we would be charged anyway. On arrival the teams had to be altered due to one missing from either team, but the rain had stopped. The match proceeded and was completed, with Staverton winning six to one.. Not great.
Rothley home 19/4/23 We hosted the annual Rothley Park team game at home with the first hints of Spring in the air, the course has started to come to life, and the standing water all but disappeared. At this point we had won both of our inter Club Matches, and as the results came in it was clear that winning streak had come to an end. Rothley won five to one.... The post Match meal was good and everyone stayed for a chat and a drink, that's what it is all about.
Yesterdays match at Lutterworth was very memorable for the way all our team were treated to some great friendship in all the groups and in particular the way you and Mick guided us through the course. It was my first visit to the Lutterworth Golf Club and i'm sure it won't be my last.
Please thank the catering staff for the excellent way they served up some very tasty and delicious food. Everyone was very complementary about the cakes and coffee served up at the 10th green. It was amazing.
Have a great golfing season and hope to catch up with you next year when you visit Rothley Park.
Very Best Regards
Mike Rothley Seniors Captain
Rugby home 12/4/23 Rugby arrived early and enjoyed a coffee in the clubhouse. The day was going to be slightly wet, and we did get rain and hail, on an already damp course. Despite that, the course played okay and Lutterworth won a good 5 to 1; the highlight being Norman and Tony turning a 5 down into a win on the 18th.... The catering was very good at both the Halfway and at Dinner, well done to the staff..
C Team 22/3/23 On a blustery day and after multiple substitutions the Match was played with six teams. Paul Langford played on his own and still managed to lose only 3 & 2. C Team won overall 4 games to 2.
Ullesthorpe away 20/3/23 A warm and dry day, compared to recent cold and wet conditions. The course was in fair condition and all holes in play with a few temporary greens. Ullesthorpe were great hosts and everyone enjoyed getting out. Lutterworth won 3.5 to 2.5
