the 2018/2019 winter season finished with the Ronnie Mee seniors open competition. We had a good turnout for the Ronnie Mee trophy despite the weather which was windy to say the least. A total of 22 players fought against the course and the remnants of storm Gareth. There were stories of trollies and bags being blown over and some players loosing balance when taking their shots. Although most finished the round a few succumbed to the conditions and threw in the towel after 10 holes. Of the 22 players we had 8 non senior squad members competing, we are very grateful for their support.
The result of the competition was 1st Place - Colin Gray - 35 points - Wins £20.00 and the trophy 2nd Place - Bob Allsopp - 34 points on count back - wins £13.00 3rd Place was Chris Bridge - 34 points - wins £7.00
Colin and Bob can collect their prizes from the Secretary after 9:30 on Friday. Finally, it was good to have Neil back supporting the admin and for Dave Gingell to be around, giving morale support and presenting the prizes to those still there at the end. Crystal Match Play Competition
The 2018/2019 winter Crystal singles knockout has now reached the final match between Chris Wells and Paul Manns and the results are here. This year's Crystal has got off to a really good start with results for all of the first round matches completed and a couple of the next round by early November, ahead of schedule. There have been some close results with one match only being decided by the fifth extra hole.
The winner of the 2018/2019 Crystal match play is Paul Manns.
The 2017/2018 Crystal competition has at least been completed with Mick Shilcock being the winner on the 19th hole against Ian Ward.
Regular Wednesday Games
The schedule for the Wednesday games is here and the results are here. The individual Stableford games can affect your swindle handicap with the latest table here.
Last week's winners by a clear 8 points in the Yellow Ball Competition were Vince Hallam, Gary Hayes and Brian Asbury. They were the last group in: the first group were the runners up and they sat on the edge of their chairs for what seemed to them to be several hours before they were knocked off the top spot. Even so, Captain Dave managed to smile - if wanly - as he presented the prizes.
We've had poor forecasts the last few Wednesdays - but in the event the weather turned out better than the meteorologists has prophesied. So last week, 5 December, there were just 13 stalwarts to play the AmAm and they elected to play just 10 holes. The winners were Messrs Pebody, Poole, Ogden and Hardy. They each took a princely sum home to celebrate their 45 points.
On the 19th, the last comp before Christmas, is scheduled a Texas Scramble. We normally push the boat at for this event, so the Treasurer has authorised me to buy 4 vastly generous John Lewis (and Partners) gift cards - which of course can be spent at Waitrose (and Partners).
Last week the Greensomes competition produced some excellent scores. Nearly all pairs came in with over 30 points. Vince Hallam and Brian Richardson were second on 38; but the winners by a country mile were those two outstanding golfers, George Millen and Robert Ford, on no fewer than 45 points. Well done indeed.
Last Week's Competition was an Individual Stableford* with just 4 clubs. It's been our experience in the past that the scores with less than half the kit are just as good as with the whole bag of tricks. Not last week! Chris Bridge was third with just 32 points, then Ian Ward with 33: and the winner was Chris Wells with 36. Well done - or at least better done than anyone one else!
Last week members played for the Albert Holton Trophy and it was a great pleasure to renew our friendship with Stuart. It is very generous of him to turn up year by year with a dozen bottles of wine. The prizes were won by: Third place with 35 points Ian Ward Second place with 36 points Ben Benoist Winner with 37 points Dennis Rynott. Dave tells me that there were lots of scores over 30 and the weather was a lovely autumn day.
The Captain also presented Paul Manns with the Ron Mee Trophy and Mick Shilcock with the Winter Crystal. Once they have been engraved, you can then proudly display them on your mantelpiece earning the veneration and awed respect of your friends and grandchildren.
One highlight of the first of the winter season, the Memorial Trophy that was won by Gareth Pomfret, was a 2 on the tenth hole, worth 5 points, for Chris Wells.
